The J. S. Bach Foundation was initiated by Swiss Rudolf Lutz and Private Banker Konrad Hummler 1999 in St. Gallen.
The ensemble consists of professional musicians from Switzerland, Germany and Austria but also "special guest" musicians and vocal artists of world-wide reputation.

Until January 2011, the vocal and instrumental ensemble performed under the name Schola Seconda Pratica. The understanding of Bach's cantatas comes mainly from the core of the figured bass, which was reflected in the naming: Seconda Practica means the second practice in terms of the "following" of writing. This technical term refers to those bass-centric music which prevailed in 1600 from Italy. The term "Schola" pointed out that, provided with regard to the long duration of the complete performance of vocal works by J.S. Bach Foundation, a historically oriented education of the Orchestra.
